Attorney General Schneiderman announced that his office received 1,583 data breaches notice in 2017, which was the quadruple of the 2016 number.
Hacking was the leading cause of the data security breaches (44%), while negligence account for another 25% of breaches. In particular Employees’ negligence consisted of a combination of inadvertent exposure of records, insider wrongdoing, and the loss of a device or media, accounted for 25% of reported breaches.
