President Trump Issues Executive Order on Maintaining American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence

On February 11, 2019, President Trump signed an executive order on Maintaining American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence.

The executive order has several sections, such as federal investment in AI research and development, data and computing resources for AI research and development, guidance for regulation of AI applications, AI and the American workforce, and an action plan for protection of the United States advantage in AI technologies.

The term “artificial intelligence” means the full extent of Federal investments in AI, to include: R&D of core AI techniques and technologies; AI prototype systems; application and adaptation of AI techniques; architectural and systems support for AI; and cyberinfrastructure, data sets, and standards for AI.”

The executive order sets forth several deadlines (most of them within the next 90-180 days) for various federal agencies to identify priorities, prepare reports and provide recommendation to “reduce barriers to the use of AI technologies in order to promote their innovative application while protecting civil liberties, privacy, American values, and United States economic and national security.”
