Lawyer admonished for exchanging dueling, threatening emails with client who did not pay his fees

On January 29, 2015, the presiding disciplinary judge of the Arizona Supreme Court admonished a lawyer for reacting inappropriately to emails.

In this case, according to the court documents, the complainant scheduled an initial consultation with the lawyer, who assigned an associate to the case. Within a week of the initial consultation, complainant was emailed a fee agreement outlining terms of engagement, and an invoice covering the initial consultation, follow-up conferences, email and phone calls.

The complainant didn’t pay. According to the documents, the lawyer and the complainant “…exchanged dueling emails that grew increasingly insulting and off-color…”.

The complainant called the police making a “threats report”. A disciplinary action – ending with the lawyer admonishment  – ensued.
